As a longtime My Morning Jacket fan, seeing them at The Ritz in Raleigh in 2024 was nothing short of electric. The anticipation in the air was palpable even before the band took the stage, with a crowd that ranged from diehard veterans to newcomers drawn in by the buzz of the Eye to Eye tour co-headlining with Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats.
The Ritz was packed, but the vibe was warm and communal—everyone there for the same reason: to get lost in MMJ’s sprawling soundscapes. Fans swapped stories of past shows and debated what deep cuts might make the setlist, knowing that My Morning Jacket is famous for mixing things up from night to night.
Jim James strode onstage in his signature style—think white linen suit, pink shirt, and a red flower in his pocket. The band opened with “State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.),” the stage bathed in cool blue light, and James’ voice immediately cut through the room. From there, the energy only ramped up. “Off the Record” had the whole crowd moving, and the interplay between James and guitarist Carl Broemel was as tight as ever, with riffs that felt both effortless and explosive.
The setlist was a dream for fans, spanning classics like “Golden,” “Mahgeetah,” and “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 1,” as well as newer favorites. The harmonies were spot-on, and the band’s ability to shift from psychedelic jams to soulful ballads kept the audience hooked throughout the concert.
